3 pregnancy buys that may (or may not) be recommended.

It can be so tempting to treat yourself to nice shoes and undergarments during pregnancy as your belly, and well, just about everything else expand. But don't do it, until you read my tips below.

recommended pregnancy buys

Learn about three items that are recommended and not recommended to purchase during pregnancy, as well as for birth and the postnatal period.

The Pitfalls of Buying Shoes During Pregnancy:

Pregnancy often leads to swollen feet, especially in the later stages. While it may be tempting to buy shoes that are significantly larger to accommodate this swelling, it's not advisable. Here's why:

  • Temporary Swelling: Swelling in the feet, known as oedema, usually subsides after childbirth, meaning the larger shoes bought during pregnancy may become too big and uncomfortable postpartum.

  • Foot Shape Changes: Although foot swelling is common, some women experience permanent changes in foot size or shape. However, it's hard to predict whether this will happen, so sizing up drastically could lead to owning shoes that are never worn again.

  • Discomfort & Instability: Wearing oversized shoes can cause instability, leading to a higher risk of tripping or falling, especially dangerous during pregnancy when balance is already compromised.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy Nursing Bras While Pregnant

Breast changes during pregnancy are only the beginning of what happens postpartum. It’s important to wait before buying nursing bras because:

  • Postpartum Breast Growth: After birth, and especially when milk comes in, breast size typically increases further. Buying nursing bras during pregnancy may result in bras that are too tight and uncomfortable when you actually start breastfeeding.

  • Inconsistent Size Fluctuations: Your breasts may fluctuate in size frequently, especially in the early weeks of nursing, so waiting until after delivery to buy bras ensures a better fit.

  • Invest in Adjustable Bras: If you must purchase in advance, consider adjustable or stretchable bras that can accommodate changes in size.

The Importance of “Bridget Jones” Style Black Knickers for Labour and Postpartum

Investing in large, comfortable, "Bridget Jones" style black knickers is crucial for several reasons:

  • Comfort & Coverage: During labour and postnatal recovery, comfort is key. These knickers provide full coverage and support, which is especially important when dealing with stitches, C-section incisions, or general soreness.

  • Practicality for Postpartum Bleeding: After birth, lochia (postpartum bleeding) is heavy and can last for weeks. Large, high-waisted knickers can comfortably hold maternity pads in place without shifting.

  • Disposability & Stain Management: Choosing black helps conceal stains from blood or other fluids, and since these knickers may not last beyond the postnatal period, they can be easily discarded without worry.

In conclusion

Waiting until after pregnancy to make certain clothing purchases can save discomfort and money. Large, supportive knickers are a must for postpartum care, but other items like shoes and nursing bras are best postponed until after the baby arrives to ensure a proper fit and avoid unnecessary expenses.
